The popular Hungarian styles of the time had an influence on the brilliant military uniforms worn by Hussars starting in 1700. Typically, this ensemble consisted of a short jacket called a "dolman" or, later, a medium-length "attila" jacket, both with sleeves featuring yellow or gold Austrian knots (sjtás) and heavy, horizontal gold braid on the chest; a matching pelisse, a short-waisted over-jacket often worn slung over one shoulder; colored pants, occasionally featuring gold or yellow Austrian knots at the front; and a busby (often Hessian boots). A sabretache, which is an ornamental bag that hangs from the belt, was often worn to finish the outfit.
Hussars were renowned as the army's fearless, albeit disorganized, adventurers. A hussar is typically portrayed as a womanizing, hard-drinking, hard-swearing, reckless, moustache-sporting swashbuckler. General Lasalle, the quintessential haughty hussar officer, most epitomized this mindset with statements like "Any hussar who is not dead by the age of thirty is a blackguard."
